a sense of belonging and excitement.
“Today is not about celebrating
myself, but these children. I have been here a couple of times and I just felt
the need to celebrate the day with them. They are beautiful and they deserve
all the fun they had and even more,” she said.
While receiving the celebrants
and her friends, d her birthday with friends and well-wishers
at the home.
Speaking on what influenced the
gesture, Doyin said the celebration was born of the dthe matron of the home, Evangelist Grace Akpan, appreciated
the gesture, while also praying that God will continue to be a source of
strength to her.
“Celebrating the children
definitely means a lot to them. And we pray that God will reward you for this.
I must confess that it is not easy running an orphanage, but with well-meaning
individuals like her, it is helpful. And we really appreciate this,” Akpan
said.
Highlights of the event were
presentation of various materials ranging from food items to clothing, books,
toys, provisions, toiletries and other items by the celebrant; talks; game time
for the children; a tour of the home; dance and other colourful activities.

Pizzy, the ‘So Fun Won’ crooner was also on ground to entertain the children.
Meanwhile, to also mark her day,
the child lover also distributed free books to hundreds of students across 10
secondary schools in the city.
Written and designed herself, the
book, which she tagged ‘quick review’ is a compilation of all the topics and
key points in the syllabus of the subject, Government, which was distributed to
students in SSS1 and SSS2 across the schools.
Speaking on what influenced the
project, she said it is a way to encourage reading habits among the students,
as well as to support the less privileged among them.
“Many students are often scared
of reading voluminous textbooks, so I thought to myself that one way to make
reading appealing to them is by making the book less cumbersome and attractive,
and that way, they will fall in love with it without them even knowing it. They
might feel they are just going through key points, but the truth is it covers
everything in their notebooks and textbooks.
“Also, I observed that many
parents cannot afford to buy these textbooks for their children and I felt the
need to help,” she said.
An average of 100 students were
given the books at each school and some of the schools that benefitted from the
programme are Oba Abass Aleshinloye Grammar School, Eleyele; Eleyele Secondary
School 1; Olubi Memorial Grammar school, Molete; Ansar-ud-deen High School,
Liberty Road; and St Annes School, Molete.
Others are
Ibadan Grammar School, Molete; Saint Theresa’s College, Oke-Ado; St Lukes
Grammar School, Molete; Eyinni High School (Snr), Orita; and Ibadan Boys High
School.
Mrs Adeniji
S.S, Principal, Ansar-ud-deen High School, appreciated the effort, saying it is
worth emulating.
“This is a
laudable idea. Having gone through it, it is a summary of the whole syllabus
and it will help the students a lot. This gesture from Doyin Adeoye is really
appreciated. Also some of these students are from very low backgrounds, where
getting textbooks can be very difficult, so by doing this, she is not only
helping the students, but also the parents and government as well,” she said.
In the same vein,
the Vice Principal Academics, Ibadan Grammar School, Mr Ajadi Emmanuel Akinsola
also appreciated the gesture.
“The writer has
done a good work in helping the students offering government to have a quick
review of what they have been taught in various topics. This is a very
commendable exercise and we pray that God will continue to help her.”
One of the 138
students who received the free books at Saint Theresa’s College, Sekinat,
appreciated the gesture, adding that they will endeavour to make the most of
the material.
